Antiques and Porcelain by GK in Glenview has one of these
emotional Kuper pieces for sale.
My interpretation of the painting is a man seated in a
chair. What appears to be a woman serving or attending to the seated man. Two
or more older or authoritative women supervise the interaction. One could even
get the sense of judgment from the cloaked assembly.
The great use of colors to delineate the figures and their
roles in this scene is incredible. The thick texture of the paint on the canvas
intensifies the mood and messaging.
This is amazing work from an artist born in 1888 Latvia and
ultimately working in New York and California. This piece is dated 1958. Which
would have made Rose Kuper about 60 years old. I have seen other paintings by
this artist with dates in the 70s. She passed in 1987.
